What is an Alidade?

An Alidade is a sighting device that fits around the ship’s compass. It is used for taking bearings of terrestrial or celestial bodies. Pointed at the North Star, sea travelers used it on the great open oceans for navigation. Most important, it kept them on a steady course.

The Alidade instrument is a clear symbol for the counseling experience. First, counseling can assist us in navigating unfamiliar areas in our lives. Second, it can direct and keep us on a true course.
