Seniors
Unique Challenges
After a lifetime of significant social contribution and personal achievement, members of our Greatest Generation often encounter unplanned or unexpected life transitions.
Many seniors have accomplished so much in their lives. Many also may also feel that they should be able to manage life transitions alone. But growing older brings unique challenges.
Daily Living
Having never been in this stage of life before, the elderly can struggle with losses of life-long friends and loved ones. Changes in health or income are an ever increasing influence. Diminished independence and increased social isolation can lead to loneliness and depression. Housing, medical concerns and changes in social environment come to the forefront. Independence or the plain fact of aging have an ever increasing effect on daily living.
Beliefs and Relationship
Owing to generational differences, some older adults may be unaccustomed to-or initially resist- the idea of therapy or counseling. Some seniors may have preconceived beliefs or stigmas about it. Taking off the “counselor hat” and building an authentic relationship is essential. Empathy is paramount for another to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Through integrated strategies and at times, collaboration with family or other care providers, counseling can help seniors alleviate stress and develop a new outlook often increasing the quality of and happiness in their lives.
